I don’t know about you, but I’ve done some pretty stupid things in life. Lots of things before I knew Christ, and lots of things after I received Christ. I’ve done things I shouldn’t have. I’ve said things I shouldn’t said. And I’ve thought things I shouldn’t have thought. But I’m human, and I live in a fallen world. And the truth is, so are you. You are human, and you live in a fallen world. But you know what the great news is? God knows that.
God knew you before He even created you (Jeremiah 1:5). Before you were born, He had a purpose for you. And if you’re still breathing, He still has a purpose for you. You are not a mistake.
More than that, let me tell you what you’re not. You are not defined by your past, your mistakes, your sins, your scars, or anything else that you may think you are. God’s love transcends all that. All you have to do is come to Him.
And the even greater news is that you don’t have to have it all together when you come to Him. He wants you to come to Him in all your weakness, all your sin, all your temptation, all your regret, and your lying, cheating, deceiving, all of it. He wants you to come in all of it, because He is the only one that can take your brokenness and change it into something beautiful.
1 John 4:19 says, “We love because He first loved us.” Do you know what this means! This means that in our sin, in our shame, in our mistakes, in our past, God loved us! He loved us so much that in our sin, while we were still dead in our sin, He sent His one and only Son Jesus Christ to live a perfect life, die on the cross, taking on all our sin, all our shame, all our mistakes, all our temptations, all our regrets, all our lying, cheating, deceiving, all of it—and then died. We deserved to be mocked, beaten, whipped, laughed at, humiliated, forsaken, and abandoned for our sin, but instead Jesus took all of that so that we couldn’t have to. Why? Because He loved us. Now not only did Jesus die, but three days later was resurrected by the power of God and is now at the right hand of the throne of God. We have a living Savior who has taken what we deserve, and now we can be a living soul being drowned in grace that we don’t deserve, but we can receive. Don’t think that you’re not worthy. None of us are worthy, but that’s not the issue. The issue is grace. A Savior who loved us that much. His sacrifice was for you.
If you’re thinking that you’re not good enough, that God could never love you or forgive you, listen: He already has. At the cross at Calvary when Jesus was sweating blood for you, He knew your name, He knew your mistakes, He knew your story, and He died—for you.
Nothing we do or don’t do can change the fact that He loves us. However, in our brokenness God is longing for us to come to Him. We can love Him because He already loves us. There is nothing to fear in coming to Him. He already knows everything. That includes that He knows what He can do for you. He can heal every wound you’ve created for yourself. He can forgive you every lie that you told. He can restore everything you’ve lost, and then some! All you have to do is come to Him. He is waiting.
I’ve learned that when I sin and when I fall, God is always there waiting for me to come back. If you’ve ever felt His prompting, don’t shut it out, because that means that He has chosen you to become His. He wants you. Period. No excuses, no more shame, just come to Him. He wants you. No matter what you’ve done, where you’ve been, how awful you might have screwed up, God knows, and He wants you anyways.
Not only does He want you, but look what He can do with you when you give Him all the pieces of your brokenness. When you become His and are clothed in His grace, His mercy, and His forgiveness, this is who you become. You are precious to Him (Isaiah 43:4), forgiven in Him (Ephesians 1:7), loved unconditionally in Him (1 John 4:19). You are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). Eternity is yours through Him (John 17:3).
If this love isn’t worth giving up your brokenness for, I don’t know what is. Please, don’t wait. God wants you. He loves you without condition. His grace is written in every line through the entire Bible—a book that has been proven true time and time again.
He is waiting for you and all your brokenness. Just come into His arms like the child you are. His child.
Just come.
